304 Stainless Steel Forging

Posted on Posted in Steel Forging

Stainless steel takes its name from its ability to resist rusting thanks to the interaction between its alloying components and the environment to which they’re exposed. Numerous types of stainless steel (304, 316, PH17-4, etc) are forged and served for a variety of purposes.

Type 304 Stainless Steel Forging

Type 304 is the most widely used austenitic stainless steel in forging. We can also call it 18-8 stainless steel, which comes from the composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel.

Besides the strong corrosion resistance and strength, type 304 stainless steel is forged into final shape as its has good forming and welding properties.

Forging & Heat Treatment for SS 304

Initial 304 stainless steel billets can be forged into required shape under forging dies. The difficulty of stainless steel forging is slightly larger than other steel forgings due to its worse fluidity. However, it is still applied in our forging process when strength is required in application.

Annealing is the treat treatment way that could be used after closed die forging. Firstly heat to 1850/2050 F (1010/1021c) and quench in water. Brinell hardness approximately 150.

Like other steel forgings, 304 stainless steel forgings are machinable. Machining allowance should be designed and left before forging.

Applications

304 stainless steel forging applicationCommon uses for type 304 stainless steel forgings are found in the food industry. It’s ideal for brewing, milk processing, and wine-making, as well as in pipelines, yeast pans, fermentation vats and storage tanks.

Type 304 grade stainless steel forgings are also found in application of mining, marine, and others. It can withstand corrosion that can be caused by various chemicals found in fruits, meats, and milk. Other areas of use include architecture, chemical containers, heat exchangers, mining equipment, and marine nuts, bolts and screws. Type 304 is also used in mining and water filtration systems and in the dyeing industry.

CFS Forge offers stainless steel 304 closed die forging. Forged in house, stainless steel 304 can be forged into any desired shape with the drawing’s specification. 304 stainless steel forging improves directional, impact and structural strength in addition to improved ductility and toughness.
