Weld on Spade Hinge & Gudgeon Pin

Posted on Posted in Steel Forging

Weld On Spade Hinge & Gudgeon Pin are the popular components used on dropsided or tipper vehicles. These are welded onto the side of the vehicle and hinged using an IR21 gudgeon.

Material: Mild Steel

Mild steel (iron containing a small percentage of carbon, strong and tough but not readily tempered), also known as plain-carbon steel and low-carbon steel, is now the most common material of steel forging because its price is relatively low while it provides material properties that are acceptable for many applications. Mild steel contains approximately 0.05–0.25% carbon, making it malleable and ductile. Mild steel has a relatively low tensile strength, but it is cheap and easy to form. Surface hardness can be increased through carburizing.

Process: Closed Die Forging

Weld on Spade Hinge & Gudgeon Pin

Closed Die Forging is the process of heating metal and hammering it in to a special die to produce a final product. Manufacturers use the closed die forging process to produce weld on spade hinges and gudgeon pin which need to be strong and durable.

Advantages of Forged Spade Hinge & Gudgeon Pin

Improved Strength to Weight Ratio
When forging, metal bar or billet is heated before being placed in the die then hammered until the metal completely fills the die cavity. During this process of plastic deformation, the material’s grain structure becomes compressed and aligned to the shape of weld on spade hinge and gudgeon pin which impart greatly increased directional strength with reduced stress concentrations in corners and fillets. Weld on spade hinges and gudgeon pins manufactured this way are stronger than their equivalent cast parts.

Structural Integrity
Forging weld on spade hinges and gudgeon pins greatly reduce the possibility of metallurgical defects such as porosity or alloy segregation as found after casting. This leads to reduced scrap, a uniform response to heat treatment and predictable component performance in the field. There is virtually no possibility of porosity being introduced during the forging process. Even this can be checked with a low cost ultrasonic test after manufacture. The possibility of small surface cracks can be managed with a simple crack detection procedure towards the end of the process.

Cost Benefits
Forged spade hinges and gudgeon pins generate a saving in raw material usage. Flash is the only material waste, and forging can creat net shape weld on spade hinges, which makes forging the most cost saving production method.
